Alibaba Cloud - The host of KDD CUP 2017

Introduction

It has been announced that the KDD Cup 2017 will be organized by a team from Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm and business unit of Alibaba Group and this year’s competition is titled “Highway Tollgates Traffic Flow Prediction” to seek a solution for traffic bottlenecks.

KDD Cup is the annual Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery competition organized by ACM Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, the leading professional organization of data miners.

Alibaba Cloud is a subsidiary of Alibaba Group. "Established in 2009, headquartered in Hangzhou, Alibaba Cloud began the journey by serving the internal demand of Alibaba's e-commerce businesses, such as Taobao and Tmall" (Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia). Their mission is "making it easier to do business anywhere in the world". It offers high-performance and elastic computing power in the cloud which supports companies, governments, and other institutions, not only contributing to its own commerce businesses, but also in financial, traffic, genetics, medical, and climate area. In 2014, they defended the largest DDoS attack, peaking at 453.8Gbps. In 2015-11, they supported 11.11 shopping festival, $14.2 billion transactions in 24 hours, which was absolutely a huge success. In 2017-01, Alibaba becomes the official cloud services provider of the Olympics. Now their products have been all over the world, including elastic computing, storage & CDN, database, networking, security & management, etc.

Summary

As a Chinese, I am very proud that Alibaba Cloud, a subsidiary of Alibaba has became something huge, beyond commerce businesses.
